Pros

  • Ability to create your own personal dictionary is a nice touch
  • Contains a huge database of Hindi and English words

Cons

  • Only available on Windows, so you can't effectively use it on the go
  • Sparse interface leaves a lot to be desired and really underscores the lack of features

Hinkhoj Hindi English Dictionary is a great way to hone up on your language skills and learn to better communicate. Whether you're traveling abroad through India or simply hoping to connect more readily with your migrant coworkers, this dictionary can provide you with the resources you need to learn the fundamentals and avoid any unsightly faux pas. Thee dictionary itself contains a massive selection of thousands of words and their translations, but it also provides a number of resources that are particularly useful to students of language. A "word of the day" provides you with a friendly reminder to check in on the app and fold some new discoveries into your vocabulary, and you can pull up past searches with just the tap of a mouse button, so it's easy to catch up on words that managed to slip your mind in the interim. This dictionary is available both online and offline, but you'll want to make sure to let it update fairly regularly. Given the size of both languages, the dictionary is incomplete, and new additions are patched in on a regular basis.

The design is minimalist almost to a fault. A panel on the left gives you the option to toggle between online and offline mode, search for words, and access settings, feedback, and dictionary tools. You can also access your personal dictionary here, and the ability to build out your own selection of words you know or want to learn gives this dictionary a little added versatility as a dedicated learning tool. The right panel displays the word of the day by default, as long as it's connected online, and replaces this with specific searches and sub-menus as necessary. A lot of space is devoted to entries, and the Hindi is presented in both regional script and the Latin alphabet. Hindi English dictionaries aren't all that common, and while this one isn't perfect (and it's lacking in a deeper bench of features), it's a generally competent piece of software that gets the job done.
